Courses offered in the Business & Marketing Pathway:

Personal Finance

This course is designed to provide students with a foundational understanding for making informed personal financial decisions leading to financial independence. This course is found within the Finance Career Cluster and can lead to a career pathway in Financial & Investment Planning, Business Financial Management, Banking & Related Services, and Insurance Services. Personal Finance identifies in the broadest aggregation of careers in Business, Management, and Administration.

Semester - 1/2 credit - Grades 10, 11, 12

Introduction to Business

This course is designed to introduce students to the study of business that center around organizational forms, finance, marketing, management, and human resources. Students will also gain valuable skills in business communication practices while developing a foundation for business education courses within the Business, Management, and Administration Career Pathway. Employability skills are integrated into activities, tasks, and projects throughout the course.

Semester - 1/2 credit - Grades 9, 10, 11, 12

Accounting I: Foundations

The purpose of the course is to expand the student's basic knowledge of record keeping into a more business oriented double entry bookkeeping system of accounting. Using the basic accounting equation, the concepts and procedures needed to record the changes in business assets, liabilities, and capital will be explored in detail. Upon completion of this course the students will have acquired some entry level skills in accounting.

Principals of Marketing

This course provides a basic foundation for further study in the career pathway of marketing. Students will use an online virtual business simulation as they practice making tough business decisions. The focus of the course includes conducting market research, the 4 P’s (product, pricing, place, and promotion), purchasing & inventory control, merchandising, security & risk management, and financing & business planning. Employability skills are integrated into activities, tasks, and projects throughout the course.

Computer Applications I: Productivity Tools

This course is designed to teach students how to use the computer as a business and personal tool through the use of applications software. Microsoft Office will be the application software used for word processing, database management, graphics, presentations, and spreadsheet functionality. Students will also practice skills needed for professional business communications while using integrated software programs.

Semester - 1/2 credit - Grades 9, 10, 11, 12

College Business

This course provides students with vital exposure to the major business functions in a dynamic free enterprise environment. The course offers students relevant exposure to background information necessary to execute decision making in a multitude of business specialties. Fundamentals are emphasized in areas of management, marketing, financing, and information systems.

Entrepreneurship

How do you turn an idea into a business? Entrepreneurship focuses on the skills and approaches needed to successfully evaluate and create new business opportunities (business venture and/or non-profit). This course integrates the functional areas of business to include accounting, finance, marketing, and management as well as the legal and economic environments in which any new venture operates. Students will progress through different methods for developing business ideas, the processes of starting a business, the acquisition of resources, and the key components of a business plan. Entrepreneurs who have turned their ideas into reality will act as models for students when planning and executing their own business ideas. Employability skills are integrated into activities, tasks, and projects throughout the course.
