Education Pathway Courses Offered:

Introduction to Education

This course encourages students to examine and reflect on the reasons why they might consider going into teaching. Due to the shortage of teachers nationwide, there is a high demand for people in the education field.

Course Description:

ED 101 is an introduction to early childhood, elementary, and secondary education specifically for students interested in teaching. Students will explore their potential for teaching in light of the admission criteria and licensure requirements.

This course includes the study of historical and social foundations of education, and topics such as inquiry in the teaching and learning process; schools in a multicultural and diverse society; the profession of teaching; principles of cooperative group learning; and cultural differences, communication, and stereotyping. Fifteen hours of field experience is mandatory.

Field Experience

Introduction to Education has a field experience which is required for students seeking teaching licensure. Students must complete a minimum of 15 hours in a K-12 classroom to get first-hand experience working with students.

The field experience has four basic goals:

  • To link the theoretical information presented in educational core classes with the practices of classroom teaching.

  • To sensitize prospective teachers to the dynamics and realities of the classroom, and to begin to view the classroom through a teacher’s eyes.

  • To provide hands-on experiences in the actual classroom for students seeking teacher licensure during the early stages of their University career.

  • To facilitate student development of effective reflective practitioner skills

  • Field experience while in high school can be gained through Teaching Assistant experience as well as through the Intro to Ed class.
