Standards-Based Learning, Assessment and Grading
Windom Elementary utilizes Standards-Based Learning, Assessment and Grading for all academic subjects. Learning, assessment and reporting will be focused on the Minnesota Grade-Level Academic Standards. Eagle Pride Characteristics (behavior) will be reported separately.
Standards-Based Grading Overview
Standards-Based grading measures student proficiency on course academic content standards. Standards-Based grading:
Is learning focused
Utilizes academic standards to establish the criteria by which student learning is measured (i.e. criterion-referenced)
Encourages a growth mindset and ongoing guided self-assessment
Separates behavior from academic performance
Defines & measures students levels of proficiency toward academic standards
Benefits of Standards Based Grading
Provides specific feedback about how students are progressing toward standards
Accurate Reporting
Grades are based on the most recent evidence
Goal is to attain mastery- redo is an option
Provides ample opportunity for students to practice skills and concepts and demonstrate understanding of the standards.
Separates the reporting of academic performance and Eagle Pride Characteristics; students will be responsible for demonstrating these characteristics, but they will be reported separately.

Sometimes | 2.0 | Student sometimes demonstrates positive behavior qualities as explained on the PBIS matrix. (Approaches the half and half mark) |
Seldom | 1.0 | Student rarely demonstrates positive behavior qualities as explained on the PBIS matrix.(I need many reminders, please help me practice!) |
Academic Scale Grading/Explanation of Proficiency Levels
Level of Performance | Score | Explanation |

Distinguished | 4.0 | Student has an ability to independently use and apply knowledge by demonstrating an in-depth understanding of content and skills. Student could teach others. I can teach someone else! |
Proficient | 3.0 | Student demonstrates grade level expectations of concepts and skills independently. This is the GOAL and should be celebrated! I can do it by myself! |
Developing | 2.0 | Student demonstrates a developing growth of grade level expectations, independently or with moderate support, but needs improvement on the application of concepts and skills. I can do it with help! |
Beginning | 1.0 | Student demonstrates a limited understanding of knowledge and/or inconsistent application of skills. I can’t quite do it yet. |
