Student Learning

Student Learning is the focus of almost every conversation at Winfair. Learning Targets for each lesson are designed by teachers using MN Academic Standards.  We utilize standards-based Learning grading and assessment to ensure that all students achieve grade level standards.

Our students participate 140 minutes of Literacy Instruction (REading, WRiting, phonics and spelling), 75 Minutes of Math Instruction, 20 min of music, and 30 min of Phy Ed everyday.   Weekly lessons in Science, Social Studies, Art and Media are also delivered.

PBIS

PBIS Expectations:

Windom Elementary is a PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports) school.  We work hard to proactively teach our expectations to students through classroom lessons and role playing. We have four core expectations:

  • Respect for yourself

  • Respect for others

  • Respect for your Environment

  • Be Responsible

The Eagle Pride Matrix provides details regarding respect and responsibility for each setting in our school. Winfair staff explicitly teach students expectations and personally designed lessons that are responsive to student needs.  

Math

In math, Students participate in a whole group mini lesson followed by small group instruction which allows teachers to differentiate and meet the needs of all students.  The Daily 3 structure allows students to practice math with a partner and individually while the teacher meets with small groups of students for targeted instruction.

Winfair utilizes a Balanced Literacy Approach to ensure that all students learn. Students participate in short whole group lessons in reading, writing and phonics(that are aligned to MN Academic Standards), followed by guided differentiated instruction to ensure the success of all students.  This includes ample time for students to practice in a Daily 5 format.  Daily 5 allows student to read to themselves, read with others, Listen to Reading, practice writing, and practice word study while the teacher meets with small groups of students to address individual instructional needs.
